Top Places For Asian Women to Find Educated and Well Paid Black Men

Something interesting is starting to happen at ABC – we are starting to hear from more and more Asian women who are seeking Black men who are husband material – which for many of them means educated and well paid Black men. We hear from our readers all of the time and we always appreciate the feedback, the questions, and the comments we receive. When we first started ABC, we would hear most from Black men married to Asian women (about 50%), Black men seeking Asian women (about 30%), and Asian women married to Black men (about 15%). In the beginning, maybe only 1% of our feedback was from Asian women seeking Black men – the interest was there, but just not in big numbers. Today though we estimate that a solid 10% or more of our feedback is from single Asian women seeking quality Black men to date. We have also seen the site readership change from an 80% male / 20% female mix to a 60% male / 40% female mix. It’s a welcome change! This article is written especially for those Asian women we are hearing from more and more.

So what kind of Black men are these Asian women looking to meet? By and large, they want to meet the kind of Black men described by Asian women dating Black men in our previous article, What Do Asian Women Think About Black Men – qualities such as serious, family oriented, loving, handsome, well educated, professional with a good career, and men who are gentlemen. Every note is different, but these are the qualities we hear the most. In short, they want the kind of Black men that some say don’t exist – a good Black man. We believe that good Black men are all around you, and you just have to really look and you will find them. Don’t believe everything you hear and see in the media or movies.

Unfortunately we do not have the data to tell you where to find all the good Black men, however we can tell you where Asian women have found Black husbands who are educated and well paid, which are two factors we hear from Asian women looking for Black men to marry.

Data and Methodology

Our regular ABC readers know that we tap the US Census records and slice and dice that data in ways that few others have ever done when it comes to Asian and Black couples.

  • This article will use census data from 2010 through 2015, the latest census data available.
  • This article will incorporate nationwide married Asian and Black census data that was crunched by ABC specifically for this article. To our knowledge, no other group has ever crunched married Blasian couple census data in this level of detail. Unlike most census data which is compiled into neat tables by the US Census Bureau, the census data for married couples requires a significant amount of compiling and computation.
  • This article mainly looks at BMAW married couples in the US census data. This will include all men over the age of 20 who marked themselves as Black or African American, even if they were mixed – who were married to any woman over the age of 20 who marked themselves as Asian, even if they were mixed. Sometimes the people who were mixed did a good job of describing their mix and sometimes they didn’t, but in any event, we used whatever level of detail they provided.
  • As we normally do, we include both Asian and Pacific Islander in our expanded definition of Asian people in all of our calculations.
  • For places, we analyzed all data at the county level within the states which provides a little more detail than using the metropolitan statistical area data we have used in the past. If the name of the largest city within that county is not readily apparent from the name of the county, we also show the largest city in that county.

Sometimes articles that deal with education and income can come off as elitist or classist, and that is not our intention here. We do however believe in analyzing the data and being fact-based in our articles, so before we hop into the data, let’s talk about two caveats first:

  • We fully recognize that there are many good Black men who do not have the best education or who are not well paid. We also recognize that you can be well paid without having a great education. We further recognize that not all Asian women are looking for educated or high paid Black men for marriage. We are not discounting any of that, and while all of these things are true, it is just not the scope of this article. If you are an Asian woman who is interested in the best places to meet marriage caliber Black men in general, we recommend you check out our previous article, Top 15 US Cities For BMAW Dating. Our purpose here is just to share and report what the data is telling us about Asian women and the education and income of the Black men they are selecting for marriage.
  • There are no ideal places to find educated, well paid Black men suitable for marriage. There are however places that have a higher concentration of them than other places. These places with the higher concentrations are what we will identify here.

Baseline Stats For Black Men in the US

Let’s start with the baseline education and income stats for all Black men in the US compared to US Black men married to Asian women.

Education and Income Baseline Comparisons: All US Black Men and US Black Men Married To Asian Women
Source: US Census Data Crunched by AsianBlackCouples.com
Statistic All US Black Men US Black Men Married To Asian Women
% With A Bachelors Degree 14.4% 33.5%
% With An Advanced Degree 5.0% 14.8%
Average Income All Men  $26.6K  $58.3K
Average Income All Working Men  $41.6K  $65.4K
% of All Men Making $100K or More 3.4% 13.2%
% of All Men Making $150K or More 1.1% 4.8%

When you look at the baseline stats, it’s clear that Asian women who marry Black men tend to marry Black men with better education and income than the overall US Black male population. Compared to the general Black male population, Asian women are more than twice as likely to marry a Black man with a bachelor’s degree, about 3 times as likely to marry a Black man with an advanced degree, about 4 times as likely to marry a Black man making over $100K and about 5 times as likely to marry a Black man making over $150K. About 1 out of every 3 Asian women married to Black men are married to Black men with college degrees and about 1 out of every 7 Asian women married to Black men are married to Black men who make more than $100K. The average working Black man married to Asian women makes a pretty decent average income of about $65K, which is more than double the income of US Black men in general.

Top Places Where Asian Women Are Finding Educated And Well Paid Black Men

In this section we find the largest clusters of educated and well paid Black men married to Asian women. We will look at two cuts of this data, the first cut being Black men with at least a bachelor’s degree making at least $100K, and the second cut being Black men with at least a master’s degree making at least $150K. In both cases, we look for the places with the largest clusters of Asian women married to Black men fitting the criteria.

11 Hudson County, NJ (Jersey City)      500
11 Prince George’s County, MD (Bowie)      500
15 King County, WA (Seattle)      480

California counties capture 4 places in the top 15 including the top 3 places, Los Angeles (#1), Oakland (#2), and San Diego (#3). In all three of these cities, Asian women are regularly finding college educated and well paid Black men for marriage. Other US metro areas with more than one county listed in this top 15 list include the DC metro area with 3 places on the list – Montgomery county, MD (Rockville), Fairfax county, VA (Herndon), and Prince George’s county, MD (Bowie) – and the NYC metro area with 3 places on the list – Queens-NYC, Manhattan-NYC, and Hudson county, NJ (Jersey City).  Both metro areas are well known for attracting upwardly mobile professional Black men.

We also found places with large clusters of Asian women married to Black men who had at least a bachelor’s degree, but did not have large clusters of Black men with income greater than $100K. These included Sacramento, CA; Orange County, CA; Palm Beach County, FL; Las Vegas, Nevada; Fort Worth, TX; and Miami, FL. While each of these places does have Black men with both college education and great incomes, they just do not marry Asian women in the same proportions as cities on the list above.

When we increase both the education and the income criteria, the list narrows to 4 cities – Los Angeles, Oakland, Manhattan, and Jersey City. The media would have people believe that college educated, well paid, Black men do not exist, but the data says otherwise and many Asian women have found happy marriages with these men. Given the focus on education and professional career success in the Asian community, it should not be a surprise that Asian women look for these same qualities in the men they date and marry.

Black Husband Stats By The Asian Wife’s Ethnicity

Asian women come in many different varieties and people often make the mistake of not considering the wide diversity of Asian women. In this section, we will look at the stats for Asian women married to college educated and well paid Black men by Asian ethnicity. Indeed part of what we will see here is that while education and income matter more to most all Asian ethnicities, for some Asian ethnicities, education and career success are of supreme importance.

Black husbands married to three groups of Asian women really stand out in the stats for education and income. These three groups of Asian women, South Asian women (from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka – East Indians are covered below), Taiwanese women, and Chinese women, they do not play when it comes to education. Whereas about 14% of the general US Black male population have college degrees and only 5% have advanced degrees, with these three groups of Asian women, 47% (Chinese) to 58% (Taiwanese) of their Black husbands have college degrees, and 19% (Taiwanese) to 29% (South Asian) of their Black husbands have advanced degrees. These are huge differences versus the US Black male population, as well as large differences versus other Black husbands married to other Asian ethnicities. Given the general correlation between education and income in the US, it follows then that the average incomes for the Black men married to these three Asian ethnicities are all much higher than the US averages for Black men, and range from $64K (Chinese) to $80K (South Asian).

All three of these groups of Asian women are finding college educated and well paid Black men in Los Angeles, and it is the top place for Taiwanese women to find successful Black men. Montgomery County, MD (Rockville) outside of Washington DC is the top place for South Asian women, and Jersey City, NJ outside of NYC is the top place for Chinese women to find their college educated and well paid Black men.

The next group of Black husbands married to Asian wives covers Koreans, East Indians, Japanese, and Caribbean East Indians. With this group, they have achieved bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees at generally more than 2x and 3x respectively compared to the general US Black male population. With such high levels of education, it’s then not surprising that their income levels also greatly outpace the general US Black male population.  Korean women are finding their successful Black husbands most often in LA – despite the history of the LA riots. East Indian and Caribbean East Indian women are finding successful Black men for marriage in east coast cities like NYC, DC, and Fort Lauderdale, whereas Japanese women are most often finding their successful Black men in west coast cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu.

The next group of Black husbands married to Thai, Filipino, and Vietnamese women have very similar education statistics to the previous group of Asian ethnicities, but for some reason are not as successful on the income statistics. Thai women are most frequently finding successful Black men in San Diego and other California cities. Filipino women who are very dispersed across the US are most often finding successful Black men in Long Island – NYC on the east coast, and LA on the west coast. Finally, Vietnamese women are finding successful Black men in Orange County, CA and in the greater DC area.

Our last group of Black husbands married to Cambodian, Pacific Islander, and Caribbean Chinese wives still all have education and income levels much higher than the general US Black male population, but generally lag the Black husbands married to other Asian ethnicities. Cambodian women are most often finding successful Black men to marry in Tacoma, WA. Pacific Islander women have the most success in Honolulu, and Caribbean Chinese women most often find college educated and well paid Black men in Brooklyn, NYC.

African men married to Asian women are generally highly educated, with 51% of them having bachelor’s degrees, and 28% of them having advanced degrees. These numbers are significantly better than the comparable numbers for both the US general Black male population and the population of Black husbands married to Asian women. When it comes to income, Afro-European husbands have the highest average income at $68K followed closely by African husbands at $65K. Regardless of the ethnicity background of the Black husbands in question, every group has their share of college educated and well paid Black men.

Summary

We will say it again – not all Asian women are seeking college educated and well-paid men, and this article does not apply to all Asian women. However education and career success, as measured by income, both matter for a significant percentage of Asian women seeking husbands. When you understand how many Asian families drill their kids daily about education and professional career success, it’s easy to understand how Asian women will consciously or unconsciously look for this same education and professional career success in the men they date and eventually marry. For Asian women who date Black men, the need for the Black guy to have high educational and career success may be even more acute simply as a means to overcome other family and friends objections. Let’s face it, we have seen many times how Asian families have a much easier time accepting a Black guy dating their Asian daughter when he is a doctor, a lawyer, a top corporate executive, or a successful entrepreneur with great educational credentials. Fortunately today, despite what the media portrays about Black men, there are about 3.3 million college educated Black men in the US and about 1 million Black men who make over $100K per year with a growing number of Black men even making over $1 million per year. The key is knowing where to find them and as this article illustrates, Asian women who are married to Black men have so far done a good job of finding successful Black men to marry.

Best wishes to everyone!

  1. Your stats are very close and informative. I simply need to know where to find more Asian women close to me. Also thank you for the break down of each of these groups.

    • Hi Kimbo,

Thanks for your note. Check out our article on Top US Cities For AMBW Couples. NYC in general and Queens in particular is the current hotbed for AMBW couples, but several other cities are mentioned in this article as well. The article also has a breakdown by Asian ethnicity.

      Thanks for visiting ABC!
